Two Teens Arrested After Targeted Shootings Kill Five Relatives in East St. Louis

Using a PIT maneuver, state police arrested two teenagers at Frank Holten State Park with prosecutors preparing charges.

Overview

  • State police say a weekend shooting spree hit members of a single family at three nearby East St. Louis sites and left five people dead and two others seriously injured.
  • The victims were identified by police as Cherie L. May, 49; Devin D. May, 24; Patricia A. May, 74; Quentin L. Thompson, 21; and Shania W. Thompson, 25.
  • Two juveniles, ages 15 and 16, were taken into custody Sunday after officers used a precision immobilization technique known as a PIT maneuver on a vehicle at Frank Holten State Park.
  • Officials said at least one suspect is related to the victims, investigators are continuing to probe motive and evidence, and the Illinois State Police are working with the St. Clair County State’s Attorney to seek charges.
  • Authorities stressed there is no known threat to the public and public-health research on domestic gun violence shows family-targeted killings often follow patterns that investigators will examine as the case develops.
