Two Teens Arraigned in Truro in Hockey Hazing Sexual Assault Case

Prosecutors are pursuing a joint trial to reduce repeated testimony for the three complainants.

Overview

  • The two 15-year-olds, who were arraigned Tuesday in Truro youth court, are charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual assault with a weapon tied to an Oct. 3 team hazing.
  • Police say the alleged weapon was a mini hockey stick used during one of the assaults on three teammates in Colchester County.
  • An earlier allegation that one boy used “urine” as a weapon was revised in updated documents to a common assault charge with no weapon noted.
  • Judge Ann Marie Simmons set a May 25 return date for possible pleas after the defence reviews Crown disclosure, and the Crown says the youths are expected to be tried together.
  • Both teens remain on undertakings that bar contact with the three complainants and limit access to public dressing rooms, while a publication ban and the Youth Criminal Justice Act protect the identities of the accused and alleged victims; RCMP continue a probe that began Jan. 30 after Hockey Nova Scotia reported the complaint and suspended the local team.
