Overview
- Leicestershire Police said a blue car left the Gilmorton Lane bridge on Friday at about 1:33pm and struck a southbound white Fiat Ducato minibus near M1 Junction 20.
- Both people in the car, who were teenagers, died at the scene, and four minibus occupants suffered non-life-threatening injuries with the male driver discharged and three women still in hospital.
- National Highways closed the M1 in both directions between Junctions 21 and 20 to give police, fire crews, ambulance teams and an air ambulance a safe working area for rescue and investigation.
- Fuel and oil spillages complicated recovery and forensic work on Friday, and the motorway reopened in both directions early Saturday after hours-long queues that left some drivers stuck deep into the night.
- Officers are seeking witnesses and dashcam video from around 1:30pm near Junction 20, asking people to quote incident 308 of April 10, and they say the forensic collision investigation remains underway.
