Two Rescued After Monongahela Incline Stall in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Regional Transit says a control system fault has shut the funicular until further notice.

Overview

  • The funicular, which stalled just after midnight Friday, left one rider in each car until medics reached them.
  • Pittsburgh EMS units from Rescue 1, Rescue 2 and the Technical Rescue Team used high-angle ropes for about 90 minutes to bring both out unhurt.
  • Pittsburgh Regional Transit blames a control system problem and says the line will stay closed until repairs, testing and a state inspection finish.
  • Shuttle buses now run every 10 to 15 minutes at the station to keep commuters moving along the hillside route.
  • Early morning updates noted a return to service by 6 a.m., but later PRT guidance says the incline remains shut until further notice.
