Two Relatives Charged After Newborn’s Remains Found Near Halifax

An autopsy is under way to determine the infant’s cause of death as prosecutors review evidence for possible additional charges.

Overview

  • Emergency Health Services responded to a Willett Street apartment Friday evening where a 23‑year‑old woman was found in life‑threatening condition and appeared to have recently given birth with no infant present.
  • Police and search teams located the remains of a newborn on Sunday in a wooded area off Old Coach Road about 10 kilometres from the apartment.
  • Halifax Regional Police charged Sukhpreet Singh and Ramandeep Kaur with concealing the body of a child, offering an indignity to human remains, obstruction of justice and resisting a peace officer.
  • The couple made brief court appearances, were remanded and consented to remain in custody until June 22 while the Crown indicated the investigation could lead to additional serious charges.
  • The mother remains critical and unresponsive in hospital, police say her condition appears linked to a medical emergency rather than violence, and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service is conducting an autopsy to determine the newborn’s cause and manner of death.
