Two Planes Pass Within 500 Feet on Parallel Approaches at JFK

The FAA says required separation was maintained despite the controller not reaching the smaller plane.

Overview

  • Endeavor Air Flight 5289 from Rochester, on final to Runway 22L Monday, crossed paths with a Cirrus SR22 to 22R with about 475 feet of vertical separation, according to Flightradar24.
  • Tower audio captured a warning to the Endeavor crew about a small plane roughly 500 feet above them, and the controller said they were not in contact with that aircraft.
  • The Endeavor pilots reported a traffic alert followed by a resolution advisory from their collision-avoidance system that told them to hold their path.
  • The FAA said both pilots received traffic advisories, each reported the other in sight, and the required separation was maintained.
  • The incident is the second close call near JFK in two weeks, drawing fresh attention to risks during parallel-runway approaches with mixed aircraft types.
