Two People Killed After VW Collides Head-On With HGV on Hall Lane

SCIU enquiries will determine whether the Golf failed to negotiate a bend as police seek witness information.

Overview

  • A Volkswagen Golf collided head-on with an HGV on Hall Lane in Wrightington just after 8am on July 9, leaving the Golf driver, a man in his 70s, and passenger Anita Ashcroft, 61, dead.
  • The HGV driver was unhurt but described as understandably shocked and is being treated as a witness in Lancashire Police enquiries.
  • Anita Ashcroft’s family have issued tributes describing her as dearly loved and expressing their shock and grief.
  • Lancashire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is leading the active probe to establish how the Golf left its lane and what factors, such as speed or road layout, contributed to the crash.
  • Officers have asked anyone with information to call 101 or email SCIU@lancashire.police.uk, and further findings from the investigation will determine whether any legal action follows.
