Two of Three Skeletal Remains Found in Foreclosed Burlington Home Identified

Forensic officials named the victims and said work on the third set of remains and the cause of death are continuing while a mortgage servicer seeks to undo the auction sale.

Overview

  • A new owner who bought the Burlington property at a foreclosure auction found three sets of skeletal remains inside the house, a discovery that occurred on June 14 and prompted a police and medical examiner response.
  • Connecticut’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified two of the remains as 54-year-old Sally Ann Cash and her adult son Brian Cash, with the identifications publicly reported on June 22–23.
  • The third set of remains has not yet been identified and is undergoing DNA testing, and officials have not released a cause or manner of death while the forensic review continues.
  • State police say there is no evidence of criminal activity at this time, but the discovery has raised questions about how the foreclosed, ‘‘as-is’’ property was handled before and after the auction.
  • Shellpoint Mortgage Servicing filed a court motion challenging the validity of the June 6 auction sale and asking for the buyer’s deposit to be returned, a move that could affect title, the status of the property, and ongoing investigations.
