Two Nighttime Chicago Shootings Hit Pedestrian and Rideshare Driver

Police have opened follow-up probes as the attacks highlight risks to people in public and to passenger-facing workers.

Overview

  • A man was robbed and shot in the Montclare neighborhood in the 7000-block of West Belmont Avenue; officers quickly took a 28-year-old suspect into custody and Area Five detectives are investigating with charges pending.
  • The Montclare victim was struck in the abdomen and transported to Loyola Hospital in critical condition, according to police statements.
  • Hours later police responded to the 1300-block of South Central Park Avenue in Lawndale where a 42-year-old rideshare driver was shot in the left leg while dropping off passengers and driven or taken to Mount Sinai in stable condition.
  • The rideshare driver’s car showed bullet holes on the driver’s door, no arrest in that case has been reported, and Area Four detectives are handling follow-up in Lawndale.
  • City officials and investigators are treating the incidents as part of the broader pattern of street-level gun violence in Chicago and are monitoring the cases for links and public-safety implications for people in public spaces and for drivers who ferry passengers.
