Two More Researchers Quit Ethereum Foundation as Resignations Build

The turnover tests the plan to shrink the foundation’s role in favor of broader ecosystem stewardship.

Overview

  • Carl Beek and Julian Ma said Monday they are leaving the Ethereum Foundation, with Beek setting May 29 as his final day.
  • Beek helped design the Beacon Chain for Ethereum’s move to proof of stake and Ma advanced EIP-7805 and a fast confirmation rule that cut Layer-2 to mainnet bridging to about 13 seconds.
  • Their exits follow recent departures or role changes by Tim Beiko, Barnabé Monnot, Trent Van Epps, Alex Stokes, Tomasz Stańczak, Josh Stark and others, extending a months-long talent drain.
  • An official May 11 update named Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn and Fredrik as new Protocol Cluster leads to steer work on upgrades such as Glamsterdam, Hegotá and Verkle Trees.
  • The foundation’s 2025 mandate set CROPs values and recast the group as a steward, and media reports say staff were asked to sign a loyalty pledge tied to that mandate.
