Two More Men Charged in Sydney Kidnap That Killed 85‑Year‑Old

The arrests deepen a probe that detectives say began as a ransom plot gone wrong and could involve up to nine people.

Overview

  • Police arrested and charged a 19‑year‑old and a 21‑year‑old on Tuesday with murder and take/detain in company with intent to ransom, and both were refused bail.
  • Those two bring to six the number of people now before the courts in the case that began when Christopher Baghsarian was taken from his North Ryde home on February 13.
  • Investigators say Baghsarian was taken in a case of mistaken identity and that the alleged plot sought to abduct a relative of businessman Dimitri Stepanyan for a ransom.
  • Police allege Baghsarian was held at a makeshift stronghold in Dural where he died, and his remains were later found near a Pitt Town golf course; CCTV and other video were released during the search.
  • The State Crime Command unit Strike Force Chabot is continuing the inquiry, police say as many as nine people may have been involved, and detectives are urging the public to provide information ahead of further court appearances.
