Two Men Drown in Rainwater Pond in Gurugram's Bajghera

Police say postmortems are under way with preliminary inquiries pointing to accidental drowning after a failed rescue attempt

Overview

  • The two men died Wednesday afternoon after one slipped into a deeper section of a rainwater pond and the other jumped in to rescue him but neither knew how to swim.
  • A dairy owner and local residents raised the alarm and teams from Bajghera police, the State Disaster Response Force, the fire department and HSDMA divers conducted the search and recovery.
  • Mahinder/Mahendra’s body was recovered within about an hour while Ranjit/Ranjeet’s body was retrieved later after a prolonged dive operation.
  • Both bodies were taken to the civil hospital and sent to the government mortuary for autopsy, and police say families have not alleged foul play at this stage.
  • Reports give differing spellings and ages for the deceased and officials say identity details will be clarified by hospital and police records as any legal steps follow family statements.
