Two Men Arrested After Reported Sexual Assault on UW–Madison Pier

The arrests come with tentative charges and an active UW–Madison Police investigation that could lead to formal charging by the Dane County district attorney.

Overview

  • UW–Madison Police say a bystander called about a disturbance at Goodspeed Family Pier just after 4 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, and officers learned a sexual assault had occurred as the victim tried to leave.
  • Investigators say the victim and the two suspects met earlier at a bar and walked to the pier before the attack.
  • Police arrested 31-year-old Yorfred H. Marcano Gutierrez and 27-year-old Arturo R. Santos Albujas, both of Fitchburg, and booked them into the Dane County Jail.
  • Booking records and UWPD describe tentative charges of second-degree sexual assault with force, strangulation and suffocation, battery and false imprisonment, and the Dane County district attorney will review the case.
  • The university says the suspects and victim are not affiliated with UW–Madison; the case is expected to proceed through further police investigation, prosecutorial review and possible court proceedings, and the incident has renewed attention to safety near campus waterside areas.
