Two Louisville House Fires Force Evacuations as Arson Unit Opens Inquiries

Large firefighting responses left occupants temporarily displaced as investigators work to determine what started the blazes.

Overview

  • Fire crews extinguished two separate residential fires in Louisville over the weekend with no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.
  • In Shawnee, crews responding to the 600 block of S. 36th Street found heavy flames around 6 a.m., brought the blaze under control before 6:30 a.m., rescued a cat, and displaced one resident.
  • In Russell, firefighters responded to the 200 block of S. 23rd Street around 1 p.m., battled heavy rear and second-floor fire that spread to a neighboring house, and evacuated three adults who were left displaced.
  • About 40 firefighters used multiple handlines and interior attack to control the Russell incident in roughly 43–45 minutes and to limit further spread between the two homes.
  • The Louisville Fire Department’s Metro Arson Bureau is investigating both fires, and displaced residents may need short-term housing and recovery assistance while causes remain undetermined.
