Two Long-Missing 1965 Doctor Who Episodes Recovered for Easter Release

Recovered from a late collector’s archive, the films have been restored by BBC Archives for public viewing.

Overview

  • The Nightmare Begins and Devil's Planet, episodes one and three of The Daleks' Master Plan, have resurfaced, and with Day of Armageddon found in 2004 the opening three parts now exist in the archive.
  • Leicester charity Film is Fabulous! uncovered the 16mm reels in a deceased collector’s donated holdings, the first confirmed recovery of missing Doctor Who material since 2013.
  • BBC Archives has restored the recordings to broadcast quality, with a special London screening set for 4 April, the day the episodes arrive on BBC iPlayer.
  • The discovery reduces the missing-episode count to about 95, though most of the 12-part 1965 Daleks' Master Plan and many other early instalments remain lost.
  • Limited overseas distribution after Australian and New Zealand censors deemed the serial too violent, combined with historic BBC wiping practices, helped create the gaps; actor Peter Purves reacted emotionally to a surprise viewing.
