Two Killed in Wrong-Way Mitchell Freeway Crash in Butler, Second in Months

Investigators are seeking dashcam footage, with earlier concerns about the freeway’s northern layout resurfacing after an October wrong-way death.

Overview

  • Police say a white Isuzu ute was travelling south in the northbound lanes near the Lukin Drive exit about 11:25pm before colliding with a Toyota Yaris and an MG MG4.
  • The 56-year-old Yaris driver died at the scene, and the 24-year-old ute driver died at Joondalup Health Campus after being taken there with critical injuries.
  • Two occupants of the MG sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and sections of the Mitchell Freeway were closed for hours for examination and clearing.
  • WA Police Major Crash officers are investigating and have appealed for witnesses and any dashcam or phone footage to be provided via Crime Stoppers.
  • The crash occurred on the same far-northern stretch where an October wrong-way collision killed Johnny Gray, prompting a Main Roads safety review that is again under scrutiny.
