Two Killed After Volkswagen Golf Crosses Into HGV on Hall Lane

Lancashire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit has opened a probe, seeking witness accounts or dashcam, CCTV or Ring footage to establish how the car crossed into the opposite carriageway.

Overview

  • Emergency services were called just after 8am on Thursday following a head-on crash on Hall Lane near Wrightington Hospital between a Volkswagen Golf and a Volvo HGV.
  • The driver of the Golf, a man in his 70s, and his passenger, a woman in her 60s, suffered serious injuries and were later confirmed dead at the scene.
  • Police say the car, which was travelling east, appeared to fail to negotiate a bend and crossed into the path of the oncoming HGV, which left its driver shaken but physically uninjured and being treated as a witness.
  • The road was closed while officers worked at the scene and has since reopened, and Sgt Martin Wilcock has asked anyone with dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage to call 101 quoting log 0297 or email SCIU@lancashire.police.uk.
  • The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is continuing inquiries to confirm the cause and sequence of events, and local investigators will use witness statements and any recovered footage to establish whether driver error, road conditions or another factor led to the crash.
