Two Hikers Rescued From Chalk Mud Below Rügen Cliffs

A winter of major cliff collapses left deep chalk mud that trapped them.

Overview

  • A 38-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman became stuck below the steep coast and freed themselves but suffered minor injuries and hypothermia.
  • Sea rescuers from the DGzRS station in Sassnitz and local firefighters reached them on the beach by inflatable boat and brought them to town for ambulance transport to a hospital.
  • A DGzRS spokeswoman said operations along this rocky stretch are difficult because access from both land and water is poor.
  • Prolonged frost this winter triggered several cliff falls, including the largest in about 15 years in early March, which left deep, sticky chalk mud along the shore.
  • Nationalpark Jasmund urges visitors to stay on the marked path above the shore, warning that accidents at the cliffs happen repeatedly.
