Two Highway Crashes in Argentina Kill One, Disrupt Major Mountain Trade Route

Investigations are focusing on risky driving and hazardous mountain conditions as emergency teams manage lane closures and vehicle removal.

Overview

  • A head-on collision on Ruta Nacional 11 at Villa Ocampo hit a Kia and an empty Fiat truck on Saturday at km 870 and left the car driver dead and four passengers injured.
  • Rescuers extracted two people trapped in the Kia, a five-year-old girl is among the injured, and the truck driver walked away unhurt.
  • On Ruta Nacional 7 near Ranchillos at km 1,163 a Mendoza truck attempted to overtake on a double yellow line, collided with another heavy truck, and caused side damage but no injuries.
  • Peritos, firefighters, police and gendarmerie closed lanes for on-scene forensics and rescue work, reopened Ruta 11 after hours of work and set a one-lane bypass on Ruta 7 while removal operations continue.
  • Authorities warned drivers to reduce speed and increase braking distance because low temperatures and snow increase stopping distances and the Ruta 7 corridor carries significant cross-border freight to Chile that can face delays.
