Two GPS-Tagged Hamburg Storks Die of Bird Flu in Spain

Nabu Hamburg reports the remaining tracked birds are healthy.

Overview

  • Officials confirmed the deaths of the tagged storks Alexander and Tobias after their last GPS signals near Madrid on December 10 and 11.
  • Other tracked birds, including Volker and Marco in southern Spain and five east-migrating storks wintering in Sinai and Central Africa, are currently reported as fine.
  • Nine regularly returning Hamburg storks carried GPS transmitters last year, enabling cross-border monitoring of routes and survival.
  • In 2025, 45 pairs on Hamburg’s territory raised about 100 chicks, reflecting strong local breeding results.
  • Hamburg hosts more nesting white storks than any other large German city, and Nabu says sufficient ready-to-use nests are available.
