Two Foreign Ships Collide Near Karachi Port

A government inquiry will determine causes and liability after KPT escorted the damaged cable vessel into Karachi following the collision.

Overview

  • The collision occurred near the Fairway Buoy outside Karachi Port on the evening of May 28 and involved a UAE-flagged cable ship (MV NIWA) and a Liberian-flagged container vessel (reported as MV Popo/MV PAPU).
  • Karachi Port Trust marine teams deployed multiple tugboats and safely brought the damaged cable vessel into Karachi Harbour while the container ship was held at outer anchorage.
  • Officials reported no casualties or injuries but said some containers from the container vessel fell into the sea, creating navigational and environmental concerns.
  • Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has opened a formal investigation, blamed the masters of both ships for negligence, and has sought a report to establish cause and liability.
  • Port authorities say operations continued normally after the incident and investigators’ findings could affect salvage, insurance claims and pilotage procedures for approaches to Karachi.
