Two Eventing Riders Killed in Separate Cross-Country Accidents

British Eventing has abandoned the affected competitions and said it will carry out formal safety and incident reviews under its procedures.

Overview

  • Two experienced riders, Sophie Fouracre, 34, and Kerry Donoghue, 42, were fatally injured in separate cross-country accidents on Saturday, July 18, at Swalcliffe Park in Oxfordshire and Frenchfield Farm near Penrith in Cumbria while riding Rhubarbsfox Brittania and Carneyhaugh Rua respectively.
  • Event medical teams rushed to both scenes and provided emergency care, and the Great North Air Ambulance was dispatched to the Penrith incident, but neither rider could be saved.
  • Veterinary teams examined both horses at the events and found them uninjured, and organisers abandoned both competitions for the weekend following British Eventing’s initial reports of 'serious incidents'.
  • British Eventing confirmed the deaths, asked for the families’ privacy, offered support through its Support Trust helpline, and said comprehensive reviews of both accidents will now be carried out in line with its safety procedures.
  • The losses have left the eventing community grieving, prompted tributes and offers of mental‑health support, and revived wider attention to the risks of the cross‑country phase even though rider fatalities remain rare.
