Two Die After Parked Car Plunges Into the Seine in Puteaux

Prosecutors in Nanterre have opened an inquiry to determine how a riverside vehicle entered the water.

Overview

  • Video surveillance and police reports placed the fall at about 4:10 a.m. Sunday near 19 allée de l’Écluse in Puteaux.
  • Paris Fire Brigade divers, assisted by the police river brigade, recovered the submerged car as both occupants were in cardiac arrest and they were declared dead shortly after 5 a.m.
  • The victims were reported as a 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, with formal identification still pending.
  • According to the prosecutor's office, a passenger called emergency services from inside the vehicle saying they could not get out.
  • Investigators documented slide marks toward the river and light bodywork debris at the scene, and responders said darkness and the site layout complicated searches.
