Two Die After Falling Through Ice in Twin Cities as Officials Recover Bodies

Investigators await medical examiner confirmations following recoveries in Minneapolis and Bloomington.

Overview

  • On Friday near the University of Minnesota rowing club, a man fell through Mississippi River ice; crews located his body Saturday about 75 feet from the break in roughly nine feet of water and recovered it with an underwater ROV.
  • A woman who tried to help during the river incident also went through the ice, returned to shore, and was taken to a hospital as a precaution for cold exposure.
  • On Saturday at Bass Pond in Bloomington, firefighters rescued an adult man from the water, while search teams later found a juvenile boy’s body around 3:45 p.m. in about eight feet of water using an airboat and sonar.
  • Authorities have not released the victims’ names or ages, and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner is working to confirm identities and determine causes of death.
  • The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office urged caution on lakes, rivers, and ponds, warning that ice is never 100% safe during changing winter conditions.
