Two Delta Jets Trigger Cockpit Collision Alerts During Atlanta Go-Around

The FAA is reviewing air-traffic instructions that put a departing plane and an arriving jet on converging headings to see what procedural changes are needed.

Overview

  • Delta flights 1568 and 2472 came close on Monday evening when flight 1568 aborted its landing and performed a go-around while flight 2472 was taking off from a parallel runway.
  • Air-traffic control directed both crews to turn right and climb to 4,000 feet, which put the two aircraft on converging headings during the go-around and departure.
  • On-board collision-warning systems issued resolution advisories in both cockpits and controllers subsequently guided the planes apart.
  • Flight-tracking data show the closest separation was about 1,800 feet horizontally and 600 feet vertically; no injuries were reported and Delta says its crew followed established procedures while cooperating with investigators.
  • Go-arounds and TCAS resolution advisories are routine safety tools used to avoid collisions, and the FAA review could prompt changes to tower instructions and coordination for busy parallel-runway operations.
