Two Dearborn Officers Shot in Gas Station Exchange, Suspect Hospitalized and Arrested

A state-led investigation of recovered handguns and surveillance footage will determine whether officers’ use of force complied with policy.

Overview

  • The encounter began after officers were sent to the Pantheon Club on reports of a man brandishing a firearm and followed the suspect in a white tow truck to a Citgo at Inkster and Van Born, where gunfire erupted Friday.
  • Plainclothes members of Dearborn’s special investigations unit identified themselves at the gas station and were met with immediate gunfire, prosecutors said the officers returned fire and struck the 32-year-old suspect.
  • Police say the suspect threw two handguns from the tow truck after the shooting; investigators recovered the weapons, marked dozens of evidence points, reviewed surveillance video and used K-9 teams at multiple scenes.
  • Both Dearborn officers were wounded, taken to hospital and have since been released to recover at home, with Chief Issa Shahin saying body armor likely prevented more serious injuries.
  • Michigan State Police are leading the multi-agency probe into the officer-involved shooting while nearby Detroit and Brooklyn shootings have left communities shaken and prompted calls from groups to provide anonymous tips to investigators.
