Two Days Before Sentencing, Summer Camp Leader Admits Drugging Wife to Facilitate Abuse of Children

Prosecutors say he ran the Leicestershire camp for years, using sedative‑laced sweets to incapacitate children.

Overview

  • At Leicester Crown Court, Jon Ruben, 76, admitted administering Temazepam to his wife between 26 and 29 July so she would not wake while he assaulted children.
  • He had earlier pleaded guilty to sexual assault of a child under 13, assault by penetration, eight counts of child cruelty, three counts of making indecent images, and four drugs offences.
  • Investigators said he played a so‑called “sweet game” by lacing sweets with tranquillizers, and eight children were taken to hospital where liquid Xanax was identified in some cases.
  • Police and court records cite 50 Category A, 22 Category B, and seven Category C indecent videos made between August 2023 and June last year, none involving children from the camp.
  • Sentencing is set for Friday 6 February, with Judge Timothy Spencer KC warning that a significant prison term is expected.
