Two Brothers Charged in D.C. Ambush of Undercover Park Police Officer

Prosecutors cite surveillance video, shell casings, seized guns to press federal charges.

Overview

  • An undercover U.S. Park Police officer in an unmarked white Tesla was shot in the shoulder around 7:30 p.m. Monday on Queens Stroll Place SE, then airlifted and later released from the hospital.
  • Metropolitan Police announced Tuesday that Darren Foster, 21, was detained shortly after the gunfire and his brother, Asheile Foster, 22, was arrested the next day, with both charged with assault on a federal officer with a gun.
  • Charging documents say Asheile had been arrested on drug charges Sunday, left the Park Police Anacostia facility Monday, and was under surveillance as a person of interest in a prior Anacostia Park shooting when the ambush unfolded.
  • Investigators executed a search warrant near the scene Tuesday afternoon and reported finding a rifle and a 9 mm pistol consistent with more than 30 shell casings recovered on the block.
  • The brothers made an initial federal court appearance Wednesday and were ordered held without bond, as Park Police, MPD, the FBI, ATF, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office continue to review video and ballistic evidence and probe possible links to the earlier park shooting.
