Two 14-Year-Olds Charged Over Geelong Laneway Assault

The case has renewed pressure for tougher action on youth violence in Geelong’s CBD.

Overview

  • Police charged two boys, both 14, with affray, riotous behaviour and using threatening words after last Wednesday’s laneway assault, and they were bailed to appear in a children’s court.
  • Three 14-year-olds were arrested on Monday night, and investigators later cleared one teen after interview when they found he was not involved.
  • Video published by local media shows a group cornering a 14-year-old, with repeated kicks and slaps and taunts, and a bottle allegedly smashed over his head.
  • Officers who responded near Little Malop Street and James Street around 5:30pm Wednesday spoke to two boys and the victim, but no one gave a statement and police reported no injuries.
  • Detectives say they know the remaining youths and expect more arrests, and they asked the public for CCTV or dashcam footage as police step up daily patrols in the city mall area.
