Twisha Sharma Case Puts Bhopal’s -80°C Preservation Order at Odds with State Mortuary Capacity

The dispute has pushed the probe toward a central agency review as forensic teams comb digital records and the family presses for answers.

Overview

  • Twisha Sharma died on May 12 and her family alleges murder and dowry harassment by her husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh while police have recorded the death as suicide and the husband is reported to be absconding.
  • A Bhopal court ordered the body be preserved at minus 80°C for long-term storage but AIIMS Bhopal told police its mortuary can only reach minus 4°C and has kept the body there since May 13.
  • Medicolegal experts cited by hospitals say standard mortuary refrigeration at about minus 4°C can keep a body preserved for months which means the lack of an ultra-low freezer does not currently endanger evidence.
  • Madhya Pradesh police prepared a proposal for the Home Department to notify the central government so the CBI can be asked to take the case, a procedural step that would start but not instantly transfer the investigation.
  • Investigators are led by an SIT and are examining seized devices, DVR footage and call detail records while Giribala Singh was removed from a government consumer‑forum post and has sought seizure and forensic checks of the family’s phones.
