Twin Wildfires Remain Out of Control Near Boston Bar

A brief cool, more humid break let crews press direct attacks as officials warn hotter, windier weather will likely drive renewed fire growth.

Overview

  • The Brunswick complex — the larger Ainslie Creek fire and the smaller Brunswick Creek fire — is burning out of control on both sides of the Fraser River and continues to threaten Boston Bar and nearby communities.
  • Multiple evacuation orders and alerts are in effect and local operators have reported homes and businesses damaged or destroyed, including losses at Blue Lake Resort.
  • Roughly 270 firefighters, about 17 helicopters and 37 heavy machines are working the fires with 24-hour ground and air operations concentrated on accessible flanks.
  • Highway 1 reopened Saturday under tight restrictions with one lane each way, a 60 km/h limit and no stopping, and air operations were temporarily suspended after a drone flight endangered crews and interrupted firefighting.
  • The BC Wildfire Service says the fires are suspected to be human-caused, reminds the public that wildfire zones are flight-restricted with fines up to $25,000 and jail possible, and warns that hotter, drier, windier weather in the coming days could push rapid growth again.
