Overview

  • The two high-casualty collisions, reported Monday in Thane district and Gujarat’s Surendranagar, left at least 18 people dead and injured several others.
  • In Thane, an overcrowded Eeco used as a shuttle taxi hit a cement mixer head-on on the KalyanAhilyanagar route, where one bridge carriageway was shut for works, killing all 11 in the van.
  • Police arrested the mixer driver, Kamlesh Yadav, on charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act after initially saying the driver had fled.
  • In Gujarat’s Surendranagar, a speeding truck struck pilgrims walking near Bhaskarpara on the Lakhtar–Viramgam highway, killing seven and injuring four in the early hours.
  • A separate crash on Tuesday near Kharegaon in Thane killed driver Deepak Patekar and seriously injured four IT coworkers after their car hit a parked trailer, with probes and hospital care ongoing.
