Twelfth Night Nears as Councils Publish January Christmas Tree Collection Schedules

Safety warnings highlight risks from dried-out trees.

Overview

  • There is no single correct date to take down decorations, though many follow Twelfth Night on the evening of 5 January or Epiphany on 6 January, with English Heritage highlighting the older custom of Candlemas on 2 February.
  • In Buckinghamshire, Child Bereavement UK will collect trees on 8 and 11 January 2026 with registration due by 4 January, Kingshill Baptist Church runs a local pickup on Saturday 3 January, and the Pace Centre collects on 8–9 January with a £10 minimum donation.
  • Bucks Council advises using household recycling centres or waiting for garden waste collections to resume on 26 January, removing all decorations, recycling lights separately, and noting that tinsel and baubles are not recyclable and artificial trees generally are not.
  • Experts caution that overly dry real trees pose a major fire hazard and may be rejected by some recycling schemes, so residents should check local collection windows and avoid keeping trees once they become brittle.
  • For artificial trees, manufacturers recommend compressing branches, securing sections, using a durable storage bag, and storing in a cool, dry place to prolong reuse.
