TV Licence Fee Rises to £180 on April 1 as Pensioners Urged to Check Free‑Licence Entitlement

Many over-75s can avoid paying if they receive Pension Credit.

Overview

  • From April 1, the annual TV licence charge increases to £180 from £174.50.
  • A valid licence is required by law to watch or record live TV on any channel or to use BBC iPlayer.
  • Free licences are available when the licence holder is 75 or over and they or a partner at the same address receive Pension Credit, and the licence covers everyone living there.
  • Eligibility can be checked and claims made via GOV.UK or the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234, with applications allowed up to four months before State Pension age and limited backdating for three months.
  • Other concessions include a 50% discount for people who are severely sight impaired and ARC licences for many care homes or sheltered housing, currently £7.50 per room.
