Turner Prize 2026 Shortlist Revealed: Barclay, Freije, Humeau, Sasraku

MIMA at Teesside University will stage the show in September, marking the prize’s first exhibition on a university campus.

Overview

  • Tate Britain named the four-artist shortlist on Thursday, setting up an exhibition in Middlesbrough in late September and a winner announcement on December 10.
  • A jury chaired by Tate Britain director Alex Farquharson chose the nominees, drawing members from the South London Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Whitworth and the Arts Council Collection.
  • Each artist was recognized for a recent show, including Simeon Barclay’s performance The Ruin, Kira Freije’s Unspeak the Chorus, Marguerite Humeau’s Torches, and Tanoa Sasraku’s Morale Patch.
  • MIMA, part of Teesside University, will host the exhibition in what the museum calls the prize’s first university setting, with £25,000 for the winner and £10,000 for each finalist.
  • Early reactions label the 2026 lineup as comparatively safe, with the Guardian and ARTnews using words like tame as Tate highlights an emphasis on sculpture, installation and performance.
