Turkey and Iraq Warn Against Opening Kurdish Front in War With Iran

Baghdad threatens to deploy federal forces to the border to block any Kurdish involvement.

Overview

  • Turkey cautioned the United States and Israel against enlisting Iran’s Kurds, with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accusing Israel of using Kurdish groups as proxies, as President Trump said he does not want Kurds entering Iran.
  • Baghdad warned the Kurdistan Regional Government that federal forces could move to secure border areas if Kurdish groups launch operations into Iran, according to Iraqi, Kurdish and Turkish officials.
  • KRG deputy prime minister Qubad Talabani stated that Kurdish forces will not participate in any campaign inside Iran, calling the conflict not their war.
  • Exiled Iranian Kurdish groups including PJAK and the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan have not ruled out action, and Iran has threatened to strike Kurdish bases in Iraq if they are used for cross‑border attacks.
  • Iraq is being hit by both sides of the conflict and faces deepening economic strain, with oil exports disrupted, payrolls at risk, pipeline talks with the KRG stalled, the Khor Mor gas field offline and electricity cut to a few hours a day in parts of the Kurdish region.
