Tuam Excavation Finds 36 More Infant Remains, Total Reaches 69

ODAIT is building a local forensic facility to support DNA identification.

Overview

  • ODAIT said Friday it recovered 36 additional infant remains at the former Tuam Mother and Baby Home, bringing the total to 69 since work began.
  • Investigators report all recovered remains were infants buried in coffins that have decayed, with a few coffins holding two or three children.
  • The remains came from an area labeled as a burial ground in historical records, and tool marks show some graves were disturbed by a mechanical digger after 1977.
  • The identification program has collected 33 family DNA samples, and an on-site mortuary and lab is nearing completion to enable large-scale analysis.
  • Excavation began on July 14, 2025 and follows Catherine Corless’s 2014 research that prompted a state-led investigation into undocumented child burials at the site.
