Trump Officials Break Ground on New York Gas Pipeline With Service Targeted for 2027

The revival follows new federal and state permits after years of denials.

Overview

  • The Northeast Supply Enhancement pipeline, which held a ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday in Brooklyn, has all required permits and is moving into pre‑construction with main work planned for the fall and service slated for late 2027.
  • It will expand Williams’ Transco network with about 24 to 25 miles of new pipe under New York Harbor and Raritan Bay to carry 400,000 dekatherms of gas per day, enough for roughly 2.3 million homes.
  • After FERC reissued its certificate in August 2025, New York and New Jersey regulators issued permits in November that Gov. Kathy Hochul approved following earlier rejections in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
  • Environmental groups have sued to block the project, warning that trenching and dredging could stir up mercury, PCBs and other toxins and damage marine habitat, and a small protest gathered outside the event.
  • Trump officials and Williams project up to $6 billion in bill savings over 15 years and $1.8 billion in economic activity, while Rep. Jerry Nadler’s office says National Grid customers could face about $200 million a year for 15 years.
