Overview
- U.S. Northern Command said Guard units sent to Chicago, Portland and Los Angeles have completed demobilizing activities.
- The Pentagon reported more than 5,000 troops left California, about 500 left Chicago and roughly 200 left Oregon, with all sent home by Jan. 21.
- The Supreme Court in December temporarily blocked the administration from deploying troops to Chicago, finding such federalization permissible only in exceptional cases.
- A federal judge previously condemned the deployments as creating “a national police force with the president as its chief,” as states and cities pursued lawsuits alleging political overreach.
- Guard activity continues elsewhere, with more than 2,500 members in Washington, D.C., under nonfederal status and separate state-run missions in Memphis and New Orleans financed under a federal agreement.
