Trucker Who Killed Olympian Alexandra Paul Gets 2½ Years and a 7-Year Driving Ban

Speeding in a marked work zone, along with extreme hours on duty, drove the harsher penalty.

Overview

  • A judge in Orangeville, Ontario sentenced Sukhwinder Sidhu on Wednesday to two and a half years in prison and barred him from driving for seven years.
  • Court records say his transport truck entered a clearly signed 60 km/h construction zone at about 107 km/h on Aug. 22, 2023 in Melancthon Township, causing a seven-vehicle crash that killed Alexandra Paul.
  • Sidhu had been on duty for more than 26 hours, including at least 16 hours of driving, and the judge noted multiple prior speeding infractions when deciding the sentence.
  • Paul’s 10-month-old son suffered a broken leg, and family members, including husband and former skating partner Mitchell Islam, told the court their child will grow up without his mother.
  • Before sentencing, Sidhu apologized and accepted responsibility; the judge acknowledged his lack of a criminal record and family ties but said the driving record and speed in a work zone warranted prison.
