Overview
- A semi-truck hauling pigs overturned on westbound Interstate 80 near Colfax, blocking all westbound lanes and stopping traffic.
- Some pigs ran loose on the highway and were corralled by Placer County Animal Services and local animal control, with at least five animals loaded into an animal services vehicle.
- Clearance crews first attempted to upright the trailer but found it too heavy with live animals, so they cut into the trailer and used ramps to offload the pigs.
- Traffic was diverted off I-80 at Secret Town Road and routed toward Highway 174 into Colfax while crews worked on animal recovery and roadway cleanup.
- Caltrans reopened westbound I-80 near Magra after the scene was cleared but delays continued and investigators have not yet determined the crash cause or the total number of pigs involved.
