Tropical Storm Boris Forms Off Mexico, Moves Toward Coast

Forecasters warn heavy rain could trigger life‑threatening flooding and mudslides in steep terrain.

Overview

  • Tropical Storm Boris formed on Monday and was centered about 85 miles southeast of Acapulco with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph while moving northeast at about 5 mph.
  • The U.S. National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm warning from Laguna de Chacahua to Tecpan de Galeana and expects tropical storm conditions within about 24 hours.
  • Forecasters say Boris could bring 4 to 10 inches of rain with isolated totals up to 12 inches along coastal Guerrero and Oaxaca, raising the risk of flash flooding and deadly mudslides.
  • NHC forecasts show the center reaching the Guerrero coast Monday afternoon or evening with slight strengthening possible before quick weakening as the storm moves inland and dissipates by Tuesday.
  • Boris is the second named storm of the eastern Pacific season and the NHC is also tracking a separate disturbance off Central America that has a high chance of developing and bringing heavy rain to the region.
