Trooper Released From Hospital After I-95 Cruiser Crash as Driver Faces Charges

Charges have been filed in the case, with a fuller investigation underway.

Overview

  • The trooper was struck on I-95 South in Salisbury around 2:15 p.m. Saturday moments after removing a ladder from the left travel lane and reentering his cruiser with emergency lights on.
  • The injured trooper, based out of the Newbury Barracks, was treated at Portsmouth Regional Hospital and was released Monday, according to Massachusetts State Police.
  • Officials identified the other driver as Josue Levi Cuevas Santana, 24, of Lawrence, who will be summonsed on charges of negligent operation, speeding, using a mobile device while driving, and failure to move over.
  • State Police say the crash occurred suddenly and without warning, and they will investigate both the driver's actions and how the ladder ended up in the roadway.
  • MassDOT crews secured the ladder and cleared debris as three left lanes were closed during the initial response, and Colonel Geoffrey Noble reiterated the importance of the move-over law and seatbelt use.
