Trooper Fatally Shoots Driver After Stolen Fort Worth Ambulance Chase on I-35

The Texas Rangers are leading an active probe after DPS says the ambulance rammed vehicles and resisted a PIT maneuver.

Overview

  • DPS says troopers were notified around 6:30 a.m. Thursday that a Fort Worth Fire/EMS ambulance was traveling southbound on I-35 and the driver refused a traffic stop.
  • The pursuit continued into Austin where, officials say, the driver intentionally rammed multiple civilian vehicles near U.S. 290 and a PIT maneuver by troopers failed.
  • A trooper then fired on the upper deck of southbound I-35, striking the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities have not released the person’s identity.
  • The Texas Rangers have taken over the officer-involved shooting investigation and large portions of southbound I-35 from U.S. 183 to Airport Boulevard were closed for hours while the scene was processed.
  • Fort Worth officials confirmed one of their ambulances was stolen from Station 4 and multiple agencies remain involved as investigators work to piece together how the theft led to the long chase and shooting.
