Triumph’s India-Built 400 Range Switches to 349cc Engine as Prices Drop

The 349cc redesign targets a lower Indian tax band via a shorter stroke with reworked internals.

Overview

  • Early reviews published Friday report that Triumph’s locally made 400 models now use a 349cc TR-series single in place of the 398–399cc unit while the model names remain unchanged.
  • The smaller capacity comes from keeping the bore and shortening the stroke to 56.1 mm, plus a new crank, connecting rod, cams and fresh mapping to deliver fast-to-market changes under the 350cc threshold.
  • Outputs fall slightly depending on tune to about 28.6–39.5 BHP and 31–32 Nm, and the Scrambler 400 X’s claimed 0–100 km/h time shifts from 7.4 seconds to 8.8 seconds.
  • Test rides describe smoother, more linear power with calmer manners at normal speeds, though riders noted mirror blur near 5,000 rpm and a buzz that builds close to the 9,000 rpm redline.
  • Prices now start around Rs 1.95 lakh ex-showroom with reductions up to roughly Rs 11,000, and fuel use should improve by 2–3 km/l with one reviewer recording 27 km/l in mixed riding.
