Tripura Tribal Council Polls Log Over 80% Turnout With Re-Poll Ordered at One Booth

Officials ordered a re-poll at one booth over EVM tampering.

Overview

  • Voters turned out in very large numbers Sunday, with officials reporting roughly 81–83% participation across 28 constituencies and 1,257 polling stations where 173 candidates were on the ballot.
  • The State Election Commission countermanded voting at booth 17/39 in Hirapur Senior Basic School in the Pekuarjala–Janmejoynagar seat and set a re-poll for April 16 after credible video showed an attempt to tamper with the electronic voting machine.
  • Police said the day saw scattered clashes and a few crude bomb incidents, including one reported near a booth in Sepahijala district, and they reported injuries but no fatalities.
  • Security forces were deployed at scale, with 24 Central Armed Police Force companies and about 12,000 state and Tripura State Rifles personnel, and authorities labeled 311 booths highly critical and 693 vulnerable to direct deployments.
  • Counting is scheduled for April 17 for the Sixth Schedule council that administers most of Tripura’s tribal region, with the BJP, Left Front, Congress, Tipra Motha, and IPFT in a competitive field after BJP’s tribal allies chose to run separately.
