Tripura Says DGP's Death Was Suicide After Post‑Mortem

A 10-member criminal and forensic inquiry has been expanded to examine electronic devices, records and CCTV footage, with the opposition demanding a High Court‑monitored judicial probe.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Manik Saha told the state assembly that the post-mortem indicates DGP Anurag Dhankar died by hanging and that the death was suicidal in nature.
  • Dhankar's body was found in the washroom attached to his official chamber at Tripura police headquarters on July 20, 2026, and an unnatural-death case was registered after the discovery.
  • The investigation team was reconstituted and enlarged to 10 members under SP Namit Pathak and is being closely monitored by senior officers including IG (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper.
  • Investigators have sent Dhankar's mobile phones, laptops and other digital devices for forensic examination and are reviewing call records, post-mortem and CCTV footage, with reported follow-up work in Delhi.
  • Opposition parties including Congress, CPI‑M and CPI have organised protests and are pressing for a judicial inquiry supervised by a sitting Tripura High Court judge while the criminal probe continues.
