Trey Augustine was named the nation’s top NCAA men’s goaltender on Friday, as the Hockey Commissioners Association announced him as the 2026 Mike Richter Award winner.
He became the first Michigan State player to earn the honor after edging fellow finalists Michael Hrabal and Josh Kotai.
Augustine accepted via a pre-recorded message because he made his professional debut the same day with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings on March 31, turning pro after a junior season of 24-9-1 with a 2.11 goals-against average, a .929 save percentage, and three shutouts.
His college career closed at 99 games with a 66-25-7 record, a 2.40 goals-against average, a .922 save percentage, and nine shutouts, ending in a regional final loss to Wisconsin.
