Trevor Project Survey Finds 1 in 10 LGBTQ+ Youth Attempted Suicide in the Past Year

Hostile policies drive distress for LGBTQ+ youth, according to the report.

Overview

  • The Trevor Project’s seventh national survey of roughly 16,000 people ages 13 to 24 reports that 10% attempted suicide in the past year and 36% seriously considered it, rising to 40% for transgender and nonbinary youth.
  • An overwhelming 90% of respondents said recent anti-LGBTQ+ laws, executive actions, and public debates caused stress or anxiety, with nearly 80% feeling unsafe and nearly a quarter feeling unsafe seeking care in hospitals.
  • More than 40% of LGBTQ+ young people who wanted mental health care could not get it, and transgender and nonbinary youth who could not access hormones were nearly twice as likely to attempt suicide as those who could.
  • LGBTQ+ youth of color reported higher suicide attempt rates than white peers, and 32% said they faced racial or ethnic discrimination, compounding risks tied to identity and access barriers.
  • Supportive conditions were linked to lower suicide risk, including access to LGBTQ+-affirming spaces, consistent use of correct pronouns, gender-affirming clothing, and gender-neutral bathrooms.
