Trevor Nelson Steps Back From BBC Radio for Medical Tests

He is undergoing follow-up tests with temporary presenters appointed to keep his Radio 2 and 1Xtra programmes on air.

Overview

  • Nelson posted on Instagram that he will take a break after a routine check-up led doctors to advise further tests and he asked fans not to speculate about his health.
  • The BBC arranged continuity plans, saying pre-recorded specials will still be broadcast and naming Clara Amfo to cover next week followed by DJ Spoony from July 6 with Melvin Odoom covering other slots.
  • Colleagues and public figures have sent public messages of support, and BBC director of music Lorna Clarke wished Nelson a speedy recovery.
  • Nelson has been absent from his usual weekday 2–4pm Radio 2 show this week and will also step away from his regular Sunday Radio 1Xtra slot while he focuses on getting better.
  • The break comes during a milestone year for Nelson, who celebrated 30 years at the BBC earlier in 2026 and recently received industry honours including TRIC and ARIAS recognition.
